My best friend Haley got me into blogging (check out her blog by clicking here!) She was mostly just doing travel entries most recently while she was studying abroad, but because I love her style of blogging so much, I’ve really begun to encourage (more like force) her to start blogging at least once a week. She goes through A LOT and I think that she’s really talented with writing and posting once a week would really benefit her as a sort of emotional outlet. (Also, I just really love reading what she writes so again, it’s forced) She absolutely inspired me to start blogging in the first place and continues to encourage me to keep at it. It’s fun to constantly throw ideas for content and posts back and forth to each other. We both love to talk about ourselves so we figured it would only be right to send each other a Q+A as if anybody else actually cares about what we have to answer! Here are her sixteen questions to me, and my sixteen answers in response.
Hello Ms. Mara, it is me, Hilly Hi Hil!
1. Do you know how you got your name? Do you like it? What would your name be if you could change it?
My father named me, which is funny considering my name in his phone is spelled Bailey, smh. I believe I was named after my cousin who is also named Bailey, so there are two Balie/y Mara’s in the world essentially which has always been strange and slightly interesting to me. I love my name and I think my spelling is unique, and even though, throughout my entire life, I have been called Ball-ee, I wouldn’t change my name to anything else! I think Balie Mae is almost melodic and super precious.
2. What did it feel like to be the older sibling? Would you have wanted more brothers or sisters?
It, if I’m going to be completely transparent, makes me feel really terrible sometimes. My little brother, Aidan, is incredibly smart and dedicated, he’s always been good at every sport he’s played and maintains amazing grades and as a result got accepted into great colleges…etc. I was really lazy in school and never really applied myself the way that I should have and was only exceptional at one sport (all star cheerleading.) I feel like I mostly failed in the “role model” aspect of being an older sibling. But, I will say that being an older sibling taught me a lot of responsibility and I like to think I have always and will continue to lead my brother in a direction that makes him super polite and understanding and simply just a good human being. Being an older sister seriously stressed me out a lot because I embarrassingly look at him like my own child. As a result of my high functioning anxiety, I’ve always been extremely protective of him, sometimes too protective, but it’s because I love him and I never want anything bad to ever happen to him. But I do love him a lot and as we’ve both done some growing up, we are now the best of friends and share a lot of the same interests, hobbies, tastes in music and art styles and I’m not sure if that’s by coincidence or if he subconsciously does look up to me.. that thought alone makes me feel really warm and loved inside. He makes me laugh really hard and he’s really thoughtful. I also have two step-siblings, which is a very new and strange relationship that I’ve had to somewhat maneuver. They are great and I wish I could be around them more often.
3. Did going to Japan change your perspective on your heritage?
Japan! Is! Incredible!!!!! There’s something really momentous about visiting the place where you “come from.” The first time I traveled to Japan, I was fairly young so it was hard to grasp the idea of “this is where some of my roots were first spread” but I learned a lot through my Grandma and my family who lived there by asking tons of questions. They took me to a lot of different places and it had me constantly questioning “why is this done that way?” “why do they do this like that?” I took a lot of knowledge home with me on those trips but I would love to trek back now that I’m an adult to FULLY immerse myself in ‘my’ culture and have a clear understanding of all of it.
4. What’s your dream career?
To be a stay at home mom. Just kidding, sort of… I guess that I’ve never really had my heart set on a “dream career” but, for as long as I’ve been able to recall, I’ve just always wanted to be a mother. It’s the only thing I feel that I will ace and enjoying doing forever. Being a mom some day makes me excited & hopeful. Mostly excited.
5. If you could only eat at one restaurant for the rest of your life, where would it be?
I feel like this question is one where most foolishly answer their favorite restaurant that serves their favorite dish, but to be totally really (and smart), Cheesecake Factory because HELLO! There’s so many different types of food and options and everything is good. And also, mojitos, duh.
6. If someone offered you $50,000 or a lifetime of free institution pretzels, which would you take?
Damn, this is really hard. Like, embarrassingly hard. I guess I’d have to take the $50,000 and then I would just buy the Institution Pretzel recipe. I stay winning.
7. What’s your favorite thing about your partner? (Hi Nic!)
My favorite thing about Nic would I guess be one major thing that breaks down into several different things. My number one favorite thing about Nic is that he has always been my BEST friend before anything else. Which like I prepared you for, translates seamlessly into how easy it is for us to talk to each other as friends and not just as partners. It makes sorting our issues out authentic, direct and painless. Continuing to put our friendship first also aids how easy it is for us to make each other laugh and for us to laugh with one another. Our friendship in high school was situated completely around cracking each other up constantly and being the “clowns” of our friend group. Our friendship goes hand in hand with how simply natural and sincere our relationship as partners is. I’ve never had an easier relationship (romantic or otherwise) in my lifetime thus far. He makes loving him really easy and is the best partner I could imagine for myself. I couldn’t imagine my life for the past 9 years without him in it. He’s the best.
8. Do you have a favorite nail color?
OPI’s Barefoot in Barcelona is my favorite color for my toes, and I like OPI’s Be There in a Prosecco on my fingers!
9. What’s your first memory with me?
The farthest memory I can take myself back to is in the 6th grade, we were in a classroom at lunch, when you were really mad at me for something and so you were yelling at me, crying but also eating almonds at the same time and I was laughing at you, which just made you more angry with me. Seems accurate of how our friendship has developed and matured!
10. If you had to give away all your face products and you could keep just one, which would it be? Why?
Why would you do this to me?? It would have to be Glossier Priming Moisturizer RICH because I’ve never had any product like it, I’ve never had my skin love a product so much. And if I’m gonna have acne at least I will be MOISTURIZED honey!!!
11. What is your favorite ride at Disneyland? What about your favorite Disney snack?
Well considering they kind of go together like PB&J for me, Indiana Jones and a Disneyland Pickle, duh! I always buy my pickles in Adventureland and eat it whilst waiting in line to go on the only ride that has ever mattered at Disneyland, ever.
12. If you had to choose, what is your favorite memory in the past year?
Well if we’re talking 2017, it, no contest, is seeing Frank Ocean live at FYF. That was a strange reality that I to this day have a hard time grasping that I actually experienced. It felt like a extremely vivid dream that I wish I could relive over and over over and over.
13. Madewell or Glossier?
Again, why are you treating me this way? Probably Glossier just because I could more easily talk myself into this false claim that I’m spending my money “more wisely.” But ugh, I do love a good Transport Tote.
14. Which is your favorite vintage Coach bag?
I think I would have to say the one that started it all! My Coach Lunchbox Bag in Saddle, it was the OG and I saw her swinging on the bag rack and didn’t commit the first time, but when I went back a few days later I saw her draped on a mannequin in the exchange store window and I knew it was fate. She’s trusty and durable and goes with EVERYTHING. It’s such a timeless piece that looks super modern but still could pass as vintage. I love her v much.
15. Toppers or Chile Verde Institution pizza?
Chile verde Institution pizza, all the time, every time, anytime, always.
16. If you could go on vacation to anywhere in the world, where would it be? Why? Who would you take with you?
Truthfully, back to Japan. There are so many new things to experience, every thing makes you audibly ‘AWWW’ because it is all soooo kawaii, the people are so kind, the food is unbeatable and it’s also just panoramically beautiful and breathtaking. I would want to take Nic just because I know he would absolutely love it, and he is super into everything Japanese. Could you imagine him putting his Pokemon Go down? I can’t.
love you bye
Love you more, thanks!
