I’m a millennial; I was born at the “start” of (what I consider) cellular phones, raised in a time where smart phones were sprouting left, right & center and now I’m here in 2018, settled into the era of using my iPhone for EVERYTHING. In this post, I’m gonna share my most used and personal favorite apps that I keep in close proximity of my thumb because I genuinely need them to function.
I’ll start with the most obvious;
Okay so, duh, I’ve got Instagram and Twitter, I kind of gave up on Facebook and Snapchat. I’m super OCD about my Instagram feed which sucks because now I can’t stop butttttt if you’re into aesthetically pleasing feeds (shameless plug) follow me here: @jutstda. I mainly post pictures of plants & brick walls which I’m surprised I don’t have more of by now, but I also like to make montages of my friends and I or just whatever I’ve been up to recently (Disneyland 9/10 times) and upload them there. And I, of course, post the occasional selfie. Let’s follow each other!
Nic got me into Reddit a bit over a year ago and it’s one of those “let me kill the time” apps. I learn a lot from it, I have made some friends through it and it’s fun to explain my specific experiences to others too. Some of my favorite subs are r/FrankOcean, r/muacirclejerk, r/tippytaps, r/ExplainLikeImFive and r/TIFU
I spend a lot of time laughing here because everyone is so witty and quick with how clever and hysterical their responses/original posts are. Nic and I have this fun thing we do where we take each others ideas or successes and post them for ourselves so we get more Karma >:) Evil… Anyways; if you’ve never been on Reddit, there really is a sub for everything, even things you didn’t know you were interested in. Give it a whirl! Free in the app store or online.
VSCO is a photo editing app that is what actual dreams are made of. This is what I’ve used to edit all my pictures in the last two or so years and while I’ve had this app before, I didn’t use it as much as I do now. VSCO is super user friendly, easy to navigate and FREEEEEE. Well, it’s free with a few sets of filters but I bought the year round subscription and have all the filters unlocked, oops. Realistically, a few filters is all you need anyway and the free options provided are great, but I have a really hard time not being extra, hence why I bought them all. My favorite filters to use are fp8, ku4, g1 and av4. I also tweak the contrast and exposure just a bit, to my liking, before saving the edited picture back to my camera roll. Try this app if you haven’t, it’s fun to mess around with and has some really unique and beautiful filters.
Y’ALL! THIS APP SAVES MY LIFE! I have a realllllly bad memory when it comes to appointments, work related things, social events and basically I just cannot, for the life of me, remember all the things that I need to remember off the top of my head. I love planners, I think they’re awesome; they’re so much fun to customize and they are easy to flip through and jot things down quickly. But for me, carrying a book around at all times is not realistic and I always end up buying physical planners every single year, fill out one month, then give up. I had to think of a way I could quickly run through and throw in reminders without using the calendar app (it’s ugly) that was organized, easy and cute. Pocketlife hits all of those marks for me. I have never been more on top of my game with planning than I have been since I first downloaded Pocketlife. Everything is customizable, EVERYTHING. You can set your own pictures as backgrounds for the different months (I just chose colors because it was less distracting) you can choose whatever font you like best, you can change the reminder times, you can set different urgencies, different banner shapes, eveeerryyyything is fit to what you think is best. I love this app so much, it sits in the most easily accessible spot on my home page because I use it so often, It makes planning fun. Pocketlife is free in the app store!
I live about an hour away from LA which is where I commute to and from work every single day, and if you got anxiety from that sentence, then, welcome to my life. I sit in the car for about 2 1/2-3 hours everyday, depending on the time I leave for/from work. LA traffic is killer and Waze helps me navigate through that as best as it can. What I like about Waze is that it is user driven, meaning it takes the alerts/traffic updates from its “Wazers” to calculate better routes for the drivers. Waze has saved me hours and hours of travel time by giving me the quickest route to my destination it can calculate. Ily Waze, thanks!
Noisli has helped my sleep schedule and, more importantly, sleep quality drastically in the past 2 years. Noisli is a white noise app that plays 3 pages of different sounds such as rain, fire crackling, birds chirping, coffee shop background noise, fan whirring and actual white noise. You can layer sounds on top of each other, adjust each noise to be higher or lower than another, the same volume or any variation of what sounds comfortable to you. If you find a formula of noise that you like, you can save it as a combo and save it for next time. The timer setting is nice because you can set it to fade away after the time you believe you’d already be asleep. Forty minutes is quite a stretch for me considering Noisli puts me to sleep almost instantly. I tend to stick with Nevelsbd (don’t remember what it stands for, I’m just as concerned as you) because it’s comforting to me and helps my brain stop running in circles. I did a low low volume of thunderstorm, with a slightly higher volume of bonfire crackling. I turn it on every single night and nothing has helped my sleep more. I’m 100% sure this is how parents get babies to fall asleep but I mean hey it works for me and also, babies don’t have iPhones so I can do it too if I want. I also use Noisli to help me focus on getting work done sometimes if I’m having a hard time focusing. This app has also helped so much with my anxiety and doing some deep breathing when I’m feeling overwhelmed. Noisli has a website and is available on the app store for $1.99 (but trust me it’s worth every cent!)
In 2017, I got super into podcasts for some reason. To my complete surprise, there were a lot more pods that talked about and were based around things that I am severely interested in; like Natch Beaut for example. Natch Beaut is hosted by “ya girl” Jackie J. who is a comedian, actress and skincare + makeup FIEND. She was the first podcast I ever listened to in my entire life who really sparked the flame for my love of them altogether. First of all, she is f-ing hilarious, she always has the greatest vegan/cruelty-free brands and products to recommend to her Hunniez and is in general, just a really really entertaining host. Jackie, if you’re reading this; I LOVE YOU AND THANK YOU! You will never know how much you’ve done for my long commutes, my skin and just..me. You are my podcast mother and I will cherish you forevs. Jackie had guests Karen & Georgia of My Favorite Murder on an episode a while back, which is what intrigued me into taking a listen at what is now my favorite podcast ever. MFM has instilled a heavy interest in murder cases/true crime inside me that I never knew I wanted. They are absolutely the funniest people, they are so genuine and just great at what they do. I’m going to see them LIVE(!) with my aunt Caroline later this month and I don’t even know if I can wait; Murderino4L babyyyy. Crash On My Couch is a podcast hosted by OG YouTuber, Arden Rose & her boyfriend William Darbyshire. They talk about everything from conspiracy theories to love advice and bring it all the way around to stories about real life idiots that will have you dying of laughter. They have helped me navigate the start of my 20’s and you can feel their love through your speakers. This is a fun one to listen to. Give it a shot! VIEWS is a pod aimed around the life and experiences of mega YouTube millionaire, David Dobrik and his older man-friend Jason Nash. Their dynamic is hilarious and as a viewer of his, gives a lot of behind the scenes insight about what goes into his quick but incredibly entertaining videos and lifestyle. They crack me up constantly and I had to include them.
Check out these podcasts and let me know what you think! They are all pretty fantastic.
& last but certainly not least….
Ignore that I need to charge my phone for a sec and you will see that you can have the Daily Balie as an app! Okay okay, not really an app but a home page button (that looks like an app.) If you enter thedailybalie.com into your web browser, I’ve circled instructions step by step on how to create a home screen badge for easier access to my blog! You don’t have to do this, but it’s super cool and my icon is a really cute set of Glossier peeping eyes. Tweet me screenshots of your homepage if you do get my “app!”
The case I have on my iPhone (7+) currently and is also shown in the picture is a Sonix case in style “brown tortoise shell.” You can buy directly from Sonix website by clicking here, or on Amazon (if you’re about that free Prime shipping life) by clicking here!

As always, thank you guys so much for reading my blog, it means more to me than any of you guys even could begin to think. I’m going to continue to lie about this name I’ve got going and I won’t be posting daily but I’ve devised a schedule (that I will try my hardest to stick to) that makes sure I blog at least twice a week.
